Sydney Botox - a down to Earth Analysis
Posted in Beauty Resources, Misc Stuff November 12th, 2009

BoTox is now the latest thing in Sydney society and has become an integral part of any beauty routine for a lot of people in the Harbour City.

But I am often amazed when I hear the various urban legends which surround this routine procedure.

I have included below some of the errors frequently heard at Star Cosmetic Medicine located in Pyrmont, Sydney.

Misconception # 1: I could lose the ability to express emotion!

Research has found there are 60 or so muscles in the human face. These ordinarily work harmoniously, but over time fine lines may start to appear. The overuse of Botulinum Toxin have the effect of the facial muscles appearing a little less taut. The amount used by virtually all physicians make you appear refreshed, yet you will keep your facial expression.

So the correct amount of BoTox in the proper place means an expressive face is preserved whilst the wrinkles undergo a softening effect.

Misconception # 2: Botulinum is a toxin!
There is a grain of truth in this. Its pharmaceutical term is Botulinum Toxin Type A. In massive amounts it can loosen muscles that you do not want loosened and can even make you extremely sick.

Chemists have a famous phrase ‘everything is poisonous - it all depends on the dose’. A large quantity of any medicine can bring on illness. Water can be a poison if enough is taken.

Misconception # 3: BoTox injections will be painful!
The hypodermic needles we use at Star Cosmetic Medicine have a diameter less than a human hair. Some individuals liken the shots to being bit by mosquitoes. It is certainly less painful than a procedure like a vaccination.

Misconception # 4: I might lose feeling in my face!
Untrue. BoTox affects the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, not the nerves of sensation. BoTox only affects the relaxation of muscles.

Misconception # 5. You cannot stop getting BoTox or the lines become worse!
This is also untrue.

A treatment lasts approximately three months. Further injections do last a little longer. Gradually as muscle strength returns - the wrinkles will return little by little. But they will certainly not be any deeper than before.

As A Matter Of Fact any lines will more often than not be softer than if you hadn’t had BoTox injections - even when you never repeat the injections. Primarily because you have given your skin a ‘wrinkle holiday’ for a few months.
